The town of Southern Pines (SoPi) is a small town that is teaming with charm and seems to grow by leaps and bounds with each month that passes. It has a inviting downtown district that lines each side of the Amtrak railway. The old train depot built in 1898 which marks a central point in town, was restored beautifully in 2004 and you can catch the Silver Line to Miami or NYC or just visit the Welcome Center.
Multi-colored turn of the century buildings hold great shops, bakeries, coffee shops, yoga studios, bars and fine restaurants. Downtown is walkable from many points in the neighborhoods surrounding it and although Southern Pines continues to grow it has managed to hold on to the unique qualities that draw people to it.
In the spring, the town awakens with all kinds of events and happenings for all ages. Watch a movie in the park or find everything from beef to cut flowers to handmade soaps at the weekly Farmer’s Market also in the downtown park. The annual Springfest and Autumnfest events allow local businesses and crafters to set up on Broad Street showcasing their wares.
Along with the iconic Sunrise Theater which has the best movies, Southern Pines hosts First Friday beginning in May. Residents and people from neighboring towns come in to see great music, sample some great local beer from Southern Pines Brewing Co., grab some grub from food trucks like a local favorite Stacks and in 2017, First Friday’s permanent stage will be complete. Bring your folding chairs & blankets to a summer concert at Sounds on the Grounds at the beautiful and historic Weymouth Center for the Arts. Many events are happening each month and this is just a small sampling of how this community comes together.
The Southern Pines Parks and Recreation Department offers a lot of resources for families -great summer camp programs for children, free sports clinics, after school programs and activities for seniors.
“Horse Country” holds a significant part of Southern Pines, it’s thriving equestrian community. With over 4,000 acres of riding trails and the Walthour Moss Foundation, it draws visitors and new residents from all over the world.
And golf…well this is the cradle of American golf after al,l so there’s lots of it. In Southern Pines, you are minutes from what some consider to be golf mecca, Pinehurst. Southern Pines has a number of nationally ranked golf courses designed by Donald Ross including Pine Needles which has hosted the USGA Women’s U.S. Opens three times and Mid Pines Resort which has hosted the U.S. Kid’s World Championships and thousands of players each year.
Southern Pines has a diverse and welcoming community made up of members of the Armed Forces from all over the nation, equestrians, retirees and there’s still a few natives around like me.
