Still Lovin’ the 1970s in Southern Pines
Recently, 915 East Indiana Avenue in Southern Pines was listed for rent. I had never been in this house before and it was a little mystery to me. Sitting on the hill, it has a tiny Prairie influence, built in 1971 with modern lines and a lot of potential. Since I’m a 70s fanatic right now both in design and architecture, I wanted to take a look before it went off the market.
I was thinking the existing exterior might look a tad better with some changes influenced by this,

99% of the time I don’t like short, high built in shelves, so we’ve got to make this entertainment central,
And on the opposite side of the room, I’d convert some of the existing windows into a set or two of french doors and try to create something like this,
Most updates always include opening up rooms to create a better flow and this kitchen is no exception. There’s excellent opportunity to make a bright kitchen filled with natural light here with great, existing windows over the sink and in the breakfast nook.

There are three more bedrooms, two upstairs with a bath and a guest suite downstairs. Nice wide open rooms, great space. Do you see why I like the 70s? It doesn’t have to be about avocado green appliances and orange and brown decor everywhere.

A 1960s Rambling Ranch Fixer Upper
This is the house that you haven’t heard about until now, 665 South Valley Road. Although it’s not on our MLS, it will be and it’s in my favorite neighborhood, the Southern Pines Golf Club neighborhood. We’ll update you as soon as we do have online listing information.
For now let’s explore the possibilities of this nearly 3,000 square foot rambling ranch built in 1961.
The house begins with the custom trim on the front door that suggests that they’ll be more of that 60’s character awaiting you inside.
Step in to the foyer and straight ahead is the kitchen, to your left is the formal living room and to your right is the hallway leading to the three bedrooms. Let’s go left,

Keep traveling past the dining table in to an addition that is basically a sunroom that connects the house to the garage. That guy bending down is Dan and he isn’t being creepy, he’s trying to figure out the flooring situation in the dining room, he wants to know like we all do, is there oak hardwood under there which was common in the 50s and 60s. Unfortunately, we only found plywood subfloor.
When we wind through the sunroom we end up in the family room with built-ins with that special 60’s trim and another cozy fireplace. The family room is open to the kitchen, separated by some columns and countertop.
Clearly the original owners sprung for custom cabinets that tied in to their welcoming front entry. Consistency in design, we can appreciate that.

Moving down the hall toward the bedrooms there is one bathroom on the hall that is a good size but needs a cosmetic overhaul. Choice items on the countertop…
This is 1 of 3 bedrooms, the other bedroom is of similar size.
All three bedrooms are on this side of the house as well as 2 of 2.5 bathrooms. This is the master bedroom.
There is an en-suite bathroom in the master and a pair of his and hers closets. There are some particularly special original light fixtures in the master bath. Star light, star bright.
There is a lot of square footage in this house devoted to a generous sewing room and an office and a laundry room. I didn’t take any photos here but we have a suggestion on how to make those spaces work a bit harder. The footprint of the house is already generous enough to allow the new owner to create a larger master suite in the workspace.
We ended our tour walking around the exterior.
There’s mostly side yard on the property but tons of space to run and roam on the old golf course which is now a large field.

Estately Living in Southern Pines
I’ve been watching the 1920s gem at 145 Highland Avenue in Southern Pines for a minute and we took some time to visit recently and it didn’t disappoint as most homes in this part of the Weymouth Heights neighborhood typically don’t.
This home is an absolute diamond in the rough and when I say rough, I mean it needs an overhaul and a significant restoration.
The backyard and property is something like a rolling European hillside, framed by two Holly trees just beyond the slate patio. Throw open the french doors off the living room, walk out on to the patio and wonder if you haven’t been transported to another place and time.
The kitchen is right at the front of the house and looks on to the driveway and it was renovated around the 1960s. It really needs a complete demolition with some thought about which walls to get rid of. You can see the back stairwell that comes down from what we thought were guest quarters. Love back stairwells!
When you enter in to a small foyer you can go left to the kitchen or right in to the living room. The floors are in great condition here in living room and in other parts of the house as well. Cosmetically, this room needs work, the windows need restoration and there is no lighting.

We move past a powder room downstairs and alongside the dining room and up the main stair case but at the foot of the stairs there was a well-trimmed peek-a-boo door. Maybe an old dumbwaiter, but there was no elevator system? Those people look familiar to me…
Once you get to the top of the main stairwell, you enter a hall with two bedrooms and a bath. Overhead there is what looks to be the biggest air return you’ve ever seen but I think it was probably a house fan that when turned on circulated fresh air throughout the entire house. These bedrooms might be children’s bedrooms or bedrooms for other immediate family. We labeled this the family wing.
Once you round the stairwell you enter what we thought would be the master bedroom and a closet/dressing room for each of the homeowners. We didn’t photograph any of the bedrooms because they were all similar, light filled white rooms. The master bathroom is of modest size from a time when we didn’t require large master baths. It has beautiful original fixtures but the pedestal sink was hardly tall enough for me.
We wind around through the guest quarters which includes two more bedrooms and a bathroom and down the back stairwell in to the kitchen. Notice the unique choice for newel post design on the stairs, is it teeth?
Back out through that tiny foyer and out the front door.

A Dreamy 1970s Fixer Upper
New to the market is 185 Little Road in Southern Pines.
It’s a 1970s dreamcicle that woke me up at 5:00 am. The house is set back in the quiet Southern Pines Golf Club neighborhood which reportedly is Donald Ross’ favorite golf courses. It’s pretty unassuming on the exterior but once you go inside you can almost instantly recognize sweet, tri-level modern living.
Love at first site, do you agree?

It’s a great house with loads of potential and it would be really great if someone with some vision would be this gem and not just make it another “flip”.
